- Perform 2–3 all-out time trials (3–12 min duration)
- Record distance and time for each trial
- Allow full recovery between trials (different days preferred)
Formula: CS ≈ (D₂ − D₁) ÷ (T₂ − T₁)
How to Test
VO₂max (vVO₂max) Field Test
This 6-minute test helps you estimate your vVO₂max pace.
- Warm up 10–15 minutes, include 3–4 strides.
- Run 6 minutes all-out but evenly paced on track.
- Calculate: vVO₂max speed = distance (km) ÷ 0.1
- Example: 1.80 km ÷ 0.1 = 18.0 km/h = 3:20 pace
Critical Speed (CS) Field Test
CS is a strong field proxy for your threshold.
- Perform 2–3 all-out time trials (3–12 min).
- Calculate: CS ≈ (D₂ − D₁) ÷ (T₂ − T₁)
- Use CS to anchor threshold training (≈92–98% of CS).
